There’s this show. This amazing, wonderful, touching, soapy, delightful show called Dance Academy. I started watching Dance Academy last week after my friend Melissa (@phantomrat) confessed to really enjoying it. There are currently 2 seasons, each with 26 half hour episodes. I finished the series in 3 days. Nonstop, up all night, three day marathon. There’s been a bit of a domino effect too with fellow twitter friends. We’ve all mainlined the show like it was TV crack (which it is) and become completely obsessed. And to the credit of everyone watching, no one is revealing what happens in the last few episodes of season 2, so that everyone can enjoy it unspoiled. That’s a rare gift in TV marathoning. With that in mind, I will be discussing the end and several other major plot developments so if you are not done with the show, STOP READING AND COME BACK WHEN YOU ARE. TRUST ME.

Rewatch Reliability
I have a long list of tv shows I need to catch up on. There’s the last 4 episodes of White Collar, half of the latest Sons of Anarchy season, Justified from 2×5 on, Downton Abbey S2, Misfits S2 & S3, The Good Wife (most of this season), HIMYM & TBBT (current seasons), Fringe (current season), and that’s just the ones in progress. Sherlock, Shameless, Homeland, Breaking Bad, Dexter, Supernatural, Suburgatory, Up All Night, Grimm, Game of Thrones, and more are on my list of start watching at some point. And you’d probably be horrified by my Netflix queue which has a good chunk of classic shows (Felicity, Charmed, etc) waiting on me. And I guarantee that I’m missing another 20 shows out of that list.
When I list those shows, I’m not listing shows that I have no interest in watching. Most of the in-progress ones are well loved by me and the others are ones I really do want to watch. Or at least try. I will give up a show if it’s not working for me. (See ya, Parenthood, Once Upon a Time, Nikita, Mad Men, Ringer and Secret Circle). I’ll even plan it out. In fact, the last three weekends in a row, I’ve set aside time to marathon Game of Thrones. It still hasn’t happened. I finished the first two books, but each time I start to watch the show, the same thing happens…
I open my DVD cabinet, shuffle through the cases for Game of Thrones, pull out the right DVD, and inevitably, something else ends up in the DVD player. Friends and Buffy have been the most recent culprits. You see that’s my biggest problem. Sure, all those shows are really excellent and I’d probably love them. In fact, I do obsessively love several of my in-progress shows. I don’t have this wariness about getting into another TV show and having something else I’m hooked on. I accept that this happens constantly with me. The thing is, no matter how good a new show is; it can’t compare to the comfort of an old favorite.
Maybe I’m the only one who feels that way. But I kind of doubt it. There’s this tendency to be reminded of a favorite moment in an old show and find yourself lost in a marathon a few hours later. Like the other day when I watched an episode of Happy Endings & Dave references the Ice Capades. While the line was funny, it makes me think of how upset Ross was that he had to sit so far away at the ice show that Michelle Kwan couldn’t read his banner. (She knows he hearts her though.) So I went to dig up that episode. I watched it, but it reminded me of a reference in S2. So I watched that. But then I was in the Julie episodes and I wanted to see Rachel’s birthday in S1 when she first realizes Ross is madly in love with her (homegirl is a little slow). Well it made no sense to just jump into the S1 finale so I started with the pilot. That was Thursday. I’m halfway through S4 now in a rewatch marathon. And yes, I know Friends waaaaay too well.
I’ve also been working my way through Buffy. Technically, I started by only watching S7. I actually love S7, even though it has my second most hated scene in all of Buffydom. I know a few Buffy virgins read this (and you should remedy that right now!) so I won’t spoil but if you’re curious, it is in “Empty Places”. My most hated is in “Seeing Red”. I liked the twinge of hope and light that S7 had in the midst of a very dark story. And for some reason that I can’t think of now, I found myself in a mood to watch Buffy. But then I was watching S7 and realized that I kind of wanted to watch a couple favorite songs in “Once More With Feeling”. Especially when Giles sings. Because I love Giles. Though not more than Oz. NO ONE BEATS OZ IN MY HEART. (Still, Anthony Head singing is one of the sexiest fucking things on the planet. When he sings Behind Blue Eyes…I DIE. All time favorite song, all time favorite band, and his voice. Gah, words do not suffice. And if you think I’m crazy, you are obviously young so give it 5-10 years and come talk to me again). So now that’s clarified and you better believe I took a 20 minute break in writing this post to go watch videos of him singing. But back to my point. Of course watching that ep of S6 triggered other favorite scenes so as soon as I finish S7 (I’m determined), I’ll be rewatching from the pilot. I really have no choice in the matter.
There’s something deliciously comfortable and reliable in a rewatch of a favorite show. I know the characters, I know the jokes or the heartaches, the shocking moments and the insane ones. But no matter how many people recommend a new show to me, 9 times out of 10 I’ll return to an old favorite. You just can’t beat a rewatch.
So what are some of y’alls go to shows for a rewatch? I’d love to hear if we’re on similar pages or totally different thoughts. Buffy, Friends, My Boys, One Tree Hill, and Leverage are my most turned to but The Big Bang Theory, Will and Grace, Gilmore Girls, and Little House on the Prairie (seriously) are pretty high on the list too.
Life Soundtrack
I’m only doing this for Erin (@entertainocd)!
Song #1: Opening Credits: ”Blinded By The Light” by Bruce Springsteen
Actually this is kind of perfect because the intro totally feels like the intro to an old 50s movie set in Morocco. (As in I want my life to be Casablanca).
Song #2: Waking Up: ”Too Many Rappers” by Beastie Boys feat Nas
No idea. Doesn’t go at all and if you played this at me to wake me up, I would hit you.
Song #3: 1st Day of School: “Keep Drivin” by Katherine McPhee.
Again, other than my wish to keep driving past school…doesn’t fit.
Song #4: Falling In Love: “Cry” by Mandy Moore
PERFECTION. This always makes me think of the end credits of A Walk to Remember and happy people falling in love.
Song #5: Fight Song: “Goin Out West” by Tom Waits
Really doesn’t fit but I have friends who hate Tom Waits so I guess it might start a fight.
Song #6: Breaking Up: “Don’t You Remember” by Adele
I swear it chose this. I don’t think a more perfect song could be chosen.
Song #7: Prom: “I’m Not Down” by The Clash
Look if The Clash were actually played at proms, I would be thrilled.
Song #8: Life: “Creepin” by Eric Church
My family calls me a creeper for following celebrities on twitter so this sort of works. Except not really.
Song #9: Mental Breakdown: “Smile” by McFly
Does not fit at all. Love the song but so so wrong.
Song #10: Driving: “The Best Damn Thing” by Avril Lavigne
I do listen to this when driving and it’s song #6 on my road trip soundtrack, the pop version.
Song #11: Flashback: “Houdini” by Foster the People.
Song #12: Getting Back Together: “I Run to You” by Lady Antebellum
Aw. Technically the people are already together in this song but the sentiment still works.
Song #13: Wedding: “Straight to Hell” by The Clash
Could not be more perfect if I tried. Dying of laughter.
Song #14: Birth of Child: “Rose Garden” by Nick Jonas and the Administration.
The most embarrassing about this is the “band”.
Song #15: Final Battle: “I’ve Been Tired” by The Pixies
Um, sort of?
Song #16: Death Scene: “I Believe in Ghosts” by Jason Aldean.
All I can picture is telling someone that and then staring creepily into their eyes and saying ‘do you believe in ghosts? do you?’ and making them think you’ll haunt them later.
Song #17: Funeral Scene: “Thrive” by Switchfoot
A song about living life. During my funeral. Nice timing, Switchfoot, now go away.
Song #18: End credits: “Boys” by Britney Spears
They did take up a lot of my time. So sure. Let’s hear it for the boys.
The Real Idaho Part 1
Occasionally I stop hitting the snooze button in the morning early enough to have time to get a cup of coffee before work. It doesn’t happen that often because I’ll take 5 extra minutes of sleep over caffeine any day of the week. But when I do manage to get up, I stop by one of three coffee shops depending on my mood. If friends are working, I head to Starbucks for a “double tall, 2 pump cinnamon dulce, nonfat, with whip, no sprinkles, light caramel drizzle, 2 pump sugar free cinnamon dolce latte.” (I used to work for Starbucks. We have the worst drink orders ever. Also we think its really funny to order a dirty chai.) If its Friday, that’s usually my excuse for a buttermilk cruller donut from DK Donuts (so good) with a cup of really awful coffee. But mostly I head into Java for a Bowl of Soul. It may be the single greatest drink ever. It starts with drip coffee, then adds steamed milk, espresso, Mexican chocolate, whipped cream made in house and sprinkled with a healthy dose of cinnamon and chocolate powder. (If you’re in a caffeine addiction mood, the Keith Richards will have even caffeine junkies bouncing off the walls. It’s milk, several types of chocolate and like 5 shots of espresso. Literal insanity).
Wow, that went off topic a bit. So my point was that I had enough time to stop for coffee and today’s choice was Java. As a neighborhood coffee shop, its always full of people, many regulars. So as I’m waiting for my bowl of soul, I overheard a couple guys talking about how they’d flown into Boise late last night, were grabbing coffee at Java and heading to Sun Valley. The condensed version of their conversation was that they come to Idaho a lot but only for Sun Valley.
Now don’t get me wrong, Sun Valley is great. There’s good skiing, some killer food and if you like celebrity sighting (which everyone does no matter what they pretend), its great. CK’s has phenomenal food, absolutely phenomenal. And of course Java is there too. Well its in Hailey which is like the same thing. But if you want to experience Idaho, you don’t go to Sun Valley. That’s like going to Vail and thinking you know what Colorado is like. Sure it’s fun but you’re not going to understand why so many people come back to Idaho. Sun Valley is the place you visit. The real Idaho is the place you live.
Grey’s Anatomy Rewatch: Season 1
I’m not completely sure what triggered my rewatch of Grey’s Anatomy but I’m now a couple episodes into S2 so I thought it might be fun to do a few posts about my rewatch. Plus not being on twitter means I have a lot of extra free time. (Seriously ya’ll just try not being on twitter for more than a couple days. It is TOUGH. I want to respond or RT stuff but I know that if I let in a little, I won’t be working on myself. It’s like that line between 1 tequila shot and drunk, a line I usually miss). Anyway, that little tidbit of info aside, let’s get into Grey’s Anatomy.
If you haven’t watched Grey’s, it’s a soapy medical drama set in Seattle. Occasionally you’ll get a very obviously LA scene in the show (where its actually filmed) but for the most part, the show does a decent job of looking like Seattle. (I say this having lived in Seattle. Again, its not perfect but its better than a lot of shows). Grey’s Anatomy launched with a ten episode pilot season in the spring of 2005. Creator Shonda Rimes was a fairly new face in the TV world so folks wondered how this show would work. Fun fact: Shonda Rimes wrote “Crossroads” the Britney Spears movie that every 90s girl loves but won’t always admit to. (Trust me, we love it and sort of want to do the karaoke bit with friends.)
A Letter to Entertainment Weekly
Hello Entertainment Weekly. I won’t lie, I’ve been a bit frustrated with your articles for a while now but the magazine (and website) tends to be a good source of TV related information so I’ve stuck it out. I hoped for articles on the shows I watch. Happy Endings, Cougar Town, The Vampire Diaries, Justified, Sons of Anarchy, Game of Thrones, etc but with limited exception, we’ve been skipped over in favor of yet another Modern Family spread or Twilight cover. I can’t really place all the blame on you. After all, this happens in a lot of magazines.
So imagine my excitement when pictures of an upcoming cover were released featuring Paul Wesley, Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder of The Vampire Diaries. Could the “other vampire show” finally be getting its due? The fans were ecstatic, believe me. Three collectible covers, a feature article and on top of that, a separate article about the shipping phenomenon were being released. I was thrilled and joined fellow fans in rejoicing that a magazine with a large circulation was finally recognizing this show that is consistently praised by critics and viewers. Add to that my excitement about the idea of an objective article about shippers and I’m sure you can understand my expectations.
“So Many Books, So Little Time”
There’s been book discussion going on on my twitter timeline constantly lately. And for those of you who know me, for every part of me that loves talking about TV, that increases tenfold when it comes to books. I’ll discuss books all day long. So I thought I’d write up a little blog post with a list of some of my favorite books. If I may, I’d encourage ya’ll to comment and list some of your top recommendations. Then I’ll have a lovely collection to refer to throughout the year.
CS Lewis once said; “No book is really worth reading at the age of ten which is not equally – and often far more – worth reading at the age of fifty and beyond.” I think that is so true. And it’s always been a reminder to me that I can still enjoy children’s books or YA books as an adult, because a good book is a good book. Alright with that said, here’s my in no way comprehensive list of books, I recommend.
Smash Pilot Review
Smash. If you haven’t heard about Smash, I’m going to have to accuse you of living under a rock. The new NBC show airs February following the Super Bowl but the marketing has been going nonstop for months now. At its basic premise, Smash is the story of the creation of a Broadway musical. I’ve been looking forward to the show for quite some time so when I discovered that the pilot was being aired for free on NBC.com and Hulu.com, I jumped at the chance to watch it. I knew going in that barring an utter disaster, I would at the very least like the show. It’s been compared to Glee (which it’s not-something I’ll get into later) so the worst I expected were some cheesy original songs.
I was blown away. Smash is, no pun intended, smashing. It’s well-written, clever, brilliantly casted and the musical numbers are perfection. Considering the musical for this season is “Marilyn”, and that Marilyn Monroe has seen a bit of a revival in the media lately, one wonders if it would be overkill or piggybacking a good thing. If the current Marilyn focus is the ice cream, Smash is all of the toppings needed for a perfect sundae. (I admit, that’s a weird analogy but it was the best I could come up with).
My Simple Comforts: A Cigarette
Let’s clear one thing up right away. I’m not writing this to justify my decision to occasionally smoke. At this point, everyone knows that smoking is bad for you. But so are fats, cookies, alcohol, in-laws, carbs, too much TV, and whatever else some new study has come up with. Smoking just gets judged the most. Besides, if you listen to theorists, we’re going to be in a nuclear war in like 10-20 years so why give up something I enjoy. Wow, that was almost justification. Whatever. The point is, I’m not naive so please don’t give me the damn surgeon general lecture in the comments.
The real point though, was to share why this is one of my comforts. First, you have to know that it’s pouring rain outside. This to me is pretty much paradise. I love the rain. I don’t mind that it makes the bottom of my jeans soaking wet or tracks in mud or forces everyone to wear sweaters. If weather can be a spirit animal, rain is mine.
Rain serves another purpose for me. I think best in the rain. Well not directly in the rain, I’m not completely crazy. But those days when I need to just think through life, not necessarily figure out little details or plan out a day, but just to process where I’m at in life, a cigarette on the porch with it pouring down rain just a few feet away is about as perfect as it gets. I’m not completely sure what it is. My only decent theory is that the methodical nature of the rain coming down and the consistent drags on a cigarette keep my mind from being able to psychotically multi-task. It’s a five-minute reprieve from the world.
That last sentence is a good reason for why I, and many of my friends enjoy a good smoke. Taking side the habitual cigarette breaks, sometimes life comes at you fast. It can be in a good or bad way but you just need to escape for a minute afterwards and process. But that’s not the only reason it’s a simple joy for me. There are memories and moments wrapped up in the idea of a cigarette too.
Election Year: Aka When Shipper Wars Seem Tame
Oh election years. The debates, fights, muckraking, promises, and handshaking are already in full force. Granted, politicians never really stop campaigning but the year of the Presidential election means everything gets that much more public and very intense. I tend to have a love/hate relationship with election year. I love having the freedom to vote. It’s a freedom more people my age should take seriously. But I hate a lot of the idiocy that comes with it. Honestly there’s very little that pisses me off more than voting for a party. That’s such a terrible way to approach the voting process. But I’ll get to that. In general, I’m not one to really talk about who I’m voting for. I’ll answer if asked, but I find most people just want to hear a name so they can argue with you, rather than understand why you made these particular choices. So I tend to encourage people to vote, rather than on who to vote for. But I thought that this year, I’d at least put my process out into the world. You don’t have to agree with it but this way if you’re like, huh, I wonder how Melissa would vote, this will probably give you a clue.
Before I get into that however, I want to encourage you to vote, no matter what. The United States allows you to write-in names on the ballot so there’s honestly no excuse for you to not vote. You can argue all you want about how your one vote doesn’t make a difference but if millions of citizens would stop saying that, you might actually see things accomplished. And don’t even think about pulling the “I have the freedom to choose not to vote” excuse on me. That’s bullshit and you know it. Write your own damn name on the ballot if you can’t think of anyone you want elected. There are millions of people in this world who would trample you on the way to the ballot box if someone gave them the right to vote. Don’t piss it away. And please remember; IF YOU DIDN’T VOTE, DON’T COMPLAIN.
